I guess some of you will know what this is for, then.

I disconnected myself from the internet to try and finish this in time but I think it's not going to work anyway ahahahahahaaaaa friends coming to stay at last minute and all =3=

This keeps me awake at night: trying not to OOC characters and wrestling with panel layouts.

In my limited experience panel layouts is like doing advanced maths homework. OTL sorry to any Liverpudlians reading this) We wanted to get a flight to Paris and Eurostar it under the Channel, or even train it all the bloody way back from Berlin, but after hearing of the people trapped in the Channel Tunnel... OTL||||

Anyway I will have much fun and money wasted getting a train back from Liverpool, that is if the trains are even running to London.

Germany was very picturesque and freezing cold (normal temperature for Canadians and warm for the Russians probably),it snowed at all the palaces we went to including during the 30-minute climb up a minor foothill of the Alps to Neuschwanstein (aka Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle) Munich in particular was AMAZING. Cleanest public transport ever especially the Sßbahn trains. If I lived in Germany I would want to live there.

I will post pictures and stupid crap I drew when I get home. Hope everyone in the UK who doesn't have to travel is enjoying the snow!

Pip pip.

But because I was really busy with rl stuff I haven't been on in a while;;

I'll be afk again till next weekend because I'll be in Munich in a few hours and IT WILL BE SNOWING *excitement, etc.*

Btw, so far I have only reached the halfway mark in terms of cards sent out, so I'm really sorry if anyone's winds up appearing around the New Year instead of Christmas. fightingoutside I got yours yesterday and your Hideyoshi is really cute <333 asjkdfjfjfdl it almost made me forget about his new costume

11/12/2009

Afk again orz||| rl is keeping me on my toes, I don't have time to even read what_the_fruk what is this fuckery?! I had screenprinting and college and social engagements and errands to run and at night I make cards instead of sleeping because I made the mistake of bringing the original to college to scan so of course the coursemates wanted to swap.

I will probably be drawing something about pantomimes soon since it is good, solid British entertainment and because there is never enough fr/uk (in that order; I wear fandom blinkers even in my own pet fandom).

I thought it would be a 'holiday' week as it was end of term but apparently not, I have 3 new projects (2 have already started and are "compulsory optional") over Christmas and then I spent most of this week inhaling poisonous fumes in the screenprint room. No chairs so legs ache :( I made some textures and stuff for PS and a magpie print. Before I could run away with it the printmaking guy grabbed it to stick up with the rest of the term's work so it'll probably only get scanned in January or something.

Some scattered pieces of junk under next cut, I haven't been drawing anything except cards for the past couple of weeks. I wanna do that 100% meme but I'll save the spam for afterwards

trying out photoshop cs4
Francis was drawn in cs3, Arthur in cs4

my holy trinity in hetalia
Austria is laughing down from lazy eyelids and flicking a speck of blood from the irreproachable Mechlin lace at his wrists... or maybe he is just thinking of how all this is disrupting his piano practice
...I know Austrians don't say "faugh" :( pretend it is a translation

portugal for wamyne
original design by weirdpika

Magpie, was it you who stole the wedding ring?
What other thieving bird would steal such hope away?
sketch for christmas card, the actual thing (I'll post it on 25th) looks fairly different from this :d

I forgot I had this on my hd, I drew it in summer and wanted to finish it but didn't.
...I'll finish St George before the end of the year ngggh

Happy holidays and pip pip.

Dear all:

s-sorry about the brightness. I have the restraint of a magpie when it comes to buying paper.

Taken when I was about halfway through

and a closeup: yes, yes it looks like angpao packets orz

For the record, I am bad at origami and did not perform very well in mockup class. However I believe those envelopes /should/ last until they arrive at your doors.

and I think I can post these off in time for christmas for people in Europe/US/Canada, but since the last posting date for everywhere else was... yesterday and I obviously haven't started drawing them yet I'M SORRY PLEASE THINK OF IT AS A NEW YEAR'S CARD

other works put on hold till I finish these, sorry to the people who friended me to see art.

Comrade, yours has extra content (and is probably larger because I don't think what I have planned would look good in that small a size) so it's not here and I'll probably be sending it later than the others - but you will get it before your birthday I PROMISE.

dates for my own reference:

US/Canada/Eastern Europe last posting date - 10/12
Western Europe last posting date - 11/12
UK last posting date - 21/12

hnnnnng I feel that I should go online more =3= maybe I can now that I don't have to pull the 24-hour project deadline thing anymore;; the first part of this week was a total fiasco urgh I must try to avoid this deadlines due on consecutive days thing next term *picks classes carefully*

I was talking (okay, whining) to chikotori about how bad I am at cultivating acquaintances online, how lazy/unmotivated/terrified I am to get basic stuff like a dA (not going into twitter territory yet tho that's where everyone seems to be, so I'm tempted but at the same time uncertain because I'm afraid it'll just get created, and I don't want to simply break into cliques or anything, and then in the end it becomes dormant) sometimes I wish we had no internet and everything was done through letters (since I like email and letters are the closest format to an email) etc...
and since she is a very levelheaded person, she said : "shut up and just sign up and worry later." (not in so many words)
Also I'm a consummate lurker so I read/look at people's stuff a lot but don't comment unless I'm familiar with the person... but to gain familiarity one must first establish a point of contact and I guess that's what I should work on.

tl;dr my alone time is my happy time?? but at the same time I'm crying out for attention.

And I have a bunch of unfinished stuff that I don't want to upload till I finish them but what with christmas cards, GARmany trip and college (I still have full day printmaking classes until the end of next week. mmmm delicious smell of ink) ... it'll be a while. I have finally got the seed of an idea for untold_destiny's erstwhile commission so I'll be working on that as well.

----

Ate up Kuroshitsuji like it was a bag of kompeito (guilty pleasure). Separate post on it later.

----

stuff I typed out during the week and meant to post but didn't want to clutter up flists-

funny superhero website: superman is a dick

French animation tutor's theory on the English obsession with weather: (accompaniment: hand-waggling)

"You English! You cannot just say out loud that 'so and so, you're cool! I like you so and so! Man you're awesome!' no, you must start talking about the weather! What is so interesting about the weather?? You!" *points at hapless British student* "You are English, right? Isn't that true? You always talk about the weather?" "W-well, yes I suppose we do talk about the weather a lot.." "You see? Always the weather!" etc.etc.

so.... "It's such a sunny day today!" would potentially mean "Marry me" ? interestingggg gotta use this in a gag somewhere

He's a cool guy. Talks a lot (not about the weather, haha).

I felt happier about my last-minuteness when I saw about half my class in line to hand in for the essay deadline and it was all "HA HA HA HA I STARTED WRITING IT AT MIDNIGHT!!" and "REALLY?? I STARTED AT 10 BUT THE BIBLIOGRAPHY TOOK ME 2 HOURS SO... AHAHAHAHA!!"

lol art school

----

There are a few routes I take to and from college, I usually take the British Museum one but the other day I decided, for a change, to go past St George's Bloomsbury (a church designed by the redoubtable Nicholas Hawksmoor, who also designed among other things Christ Church Spitalfields, better known as "that Jack the Ripper church"). The front bit of St George's Bloomsbury is pretty normal (to my uninitiated eye it looks the same as the facade of St Martin-in-the-Fields) but since this is a Hawksmoor creation this is what he did for the steeple

closer...

Did you see it?? The <s>man in skirt showing off his muscled midsection</s> lion and the unicorn on the steeple?! The steeple itself is unique in shape. Hawksmoor was a pyramid/obelisk otaku so he incorporated them into as many churches as he could get away with.

Another church with a weird steeple (through no fault of the architect) is in Chesterfield.

Edit: Have found out that man in skirt showing off muscled midsection is actually George I of England in "roman costume". Odd, had originally thought it to be Heliogabalus or some such. Am not used to seeing Monarchs of England glorified without clothing. Reason I'm so fascinated with this is that unlike Italy, England does not have all that many statues in the round of partially-nude men lounging around in public view (Arthur prefers naked women), so my radar went !!!!! when I saw old George preening on top of that steeple.

----

ameeeeeee where is the best place to <s>s</s>talk <s>you</s> about doujin? I'm toying with a few ideas atm, woman you know I would totally start plurking or tweeting or whatever it is to communicate with you

She doesn't like anime/manga, but she can spot BL undertones from a mile away.
I used to fight with her when I was younger (I was a real brat), then she tamed me into an obedient servant who does all her chores. This state of affairs continues, but nowadays since she's started working, she buys me random presents and nice food (and so does her boyfriend) so I guess I'm now a "favoured servant".
...j/k my sister is awesome though it doesn't change the fact that if she tells me to jump, I still ask "how high?"

PETS
I have a Labrador at home. He's a Thaiphile and Anglophile banana, and puts on a superior British accent when he lectures his kids (who is he trying to impress).
Just a quick blip before I have to return to the harrowing business of meeting deadlines, will edit later most probably as well as reply to comments and etc.

H-hi random people who friended me you will soon find out that I have an extremely erratic updating schedule and art of often dubious merit but I am flattered regardless.

This is just the usual christmas card post to see if anyone whom I have not stalked/asked/etc yet wants a card, most likely it will wind up being of hetaria England unless you specify something else or I know what you like.

I will of course be as gay as the proverbial treeful of monkeys on laughing gas if you want to send me anything back. Would be even gayer if anyone wants to card-art-trade >3<

Comments screened etc.

Pip pip.

EDIT: Man you guys, did not expect much response at all, I am going out to check if the local post office has finally got more of the 90p fairy stamps in.

And good luck for exams to people who have got them <33

EDIT2: Ok gaiz, from now on I'm only doing trades because unless I successfully manage to make a pile in printmaking class (plz don't underestimate how fail I am at screenprint) I don't have time to do more ;w;

Right.

Hetalia characters in wigs.

That's all this post is.

Mix work with pleasure, I always say.

I'd just been to the National Portrait Gallery on another of those illustration dept. field trips and there is nothing quite like the exquisite sameness engendered by a room hung with portrait upon portrait of Whigs in wigs. I recommend the portrait of Handel that's in the next room over to anyone who decides to venture in, it really shows off how terrible dark, thick, Arthurian eyebrows look when you're wearing a white-powdered wig.

By the way, the longer/fuller your wig was, the smarter you were supposed to be. Doctors and lawyers kept on wearing the full-bottomed wig long after other men had moved to to shorter, less cumbersome styles, and the full-bottomed wigs that judges still wear today in court are a legacy of this.

And yes kids wore wigs too (only on the Continent, sneers Arthur).

The infamous "sailing ship" pompadours for women (apparently the coiffures reached 2'6" in height) were an exclusively French fashion, so I didn't inflict them on Hungary.
During Old Fritz's reign, the Prussian army was THE most snappily dressed army on the fields. So of course everyone was wearing wigs. That long ponytail Prussia is sporting is partially artistic license as it was generally braided to the end - but they were really that long.

Technically speaking "that evil man" refers to Old Fritz.

oh no, of course they didn't escape the trend
the first person to tell the difference/identify everyone here gets a request :d

Michael of Poland had an awesome wig. I have no doubt whatsoever that (as written in The Strange Story of False Hair) the equivalent of 10 heads of hair went into that wig.

The wig craze began in France (like most fashion trends); Louis XIV unfortunately went bald in his early thirties so he had to preserve his dignity somehow. Of course soon enough it became wildly fashionable and people were literally shaving their own hair off so their wigs would sit better. (Also: issues about lice in hair due to the washing it once a year thing? Solved.)

Gentlemen wore turbans at home; it was considered a state of undress (or dashingly bohemian, depending on how you choose to look at it).

By the 1770's men (in England at least) had mostly moved away from wigs and wore their own hair, powdered. By the 1800's, influenced by the French Revolution, short hair was de rigueur.

Prinny = George IV's nickname when he was still Prince of Wales (and he was Prince of Wales for a very long time). He was grossly overweight but that didn't stop him from trying to be fashionable.

...

bonus: chonmage (THE samurai hairstyle)

Apparently if I don't post this tonight I will be flogged with a bolster so please excuse any excess stupidity.

To cut a long story short: internet problems (yes, again), SMT: Devil Survivor, Darker than Black, Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, historical novels, piling deadlines, and <s>revelations of my own uselessness</s> histrionics.

I've also been researching BDSM ("the english vice"), the process of Cuban rum-making, wigs, moe anthropomorphism (I think that is how you spell it), domestic violence, breaking my brain in After Effects, all at the same time, for various college projects.

On the side we have made (and consumed) sangria and nutella marble cake.

So, with this, that and the other thing, I've not been active much.

Oh yeh re: <img src='http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/community.gif' alt='[info]' width='16' height='16' style='vertical-align: bottom; The unintentional blurring probably helped.

Meme pinched from jali_jali, my answers are pretty boring:

What is the character you've drawn the most (Can be original or fanart)?
Uh, probably my bolster (shhhhitiscuteokay). Or various horses; I draw horses to destress.

What colour do you often use?
Black and white :x

Any colour you are bad at using?
Bright, psychedelic colours.

When drawing people, where do you start?
Either the face shape or the nose/forehead line.

What is a character only your eraser will love?
Barret from FFVII, most chunky "mukki mukki" types, Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi from Sengoku Musou T_T although Hideyoshi is one of my favourite characters, that damn monkey is freaking hard to render.

Which of your works took the longest time?
EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING TAKES A LONG TIME
So far most hours clocked in was probably that 5-page England's birthday thing though

What techniques do you use when you want to improve in drawing?
Look at other supremely supreme works of art that are of a level that commoners can but aspire to attain, either say "I WANT TO DO THAT TOO" or wallow in self-pity, and then try, try again

What do you think of the art of the person who gave you this picture meme?
I like your clean lines and inking, and your mad sense of humour!
If you make a GakuHeta ASEAN doujin, please please please say you'll ship to the UK ;w;

What art tools/media are you good with?
Pen, brush, ink, pencil. Sometimes I'm satisfied with how my watercolours turn out.

Art tools/media you are bad at?
PHOTOSHOP
OPENCANVAS
DON'T EVEN TALK TO ME ABOUT ILLUSTRATOR
Digital stuff ^^;; I'm still trying to get better. Please don't run away if I randomly jump anyone for p-chats.

What do you think about your own art?
please draw more backgrounds, please don't procrastinate so much
please be more innovative, please experiment

Do you consult magazines for your drawings?
Architectural Digest (when I'm at home) for "quaint" antique furniture. Sometimes girly mags for coming up with ensembles.

What do you like about your art?
The lines and crosshatching.

What habits do you have while drawing?
Making near-pointless trips to the kitchen to boil water for tea, tapping my feet in time to songs, playing Countries of the World on Sporcle...

Are you good at drawing faces facing right?
NO, it is one of my secret sorrows

How frequently do you draw?
Almost every day, in one way or another, except in exceptional cases

What do you do when you have artist's block?
Read, game, whine about it to my flatmates. Then see some awesome piece of art or another and get fired up again.
It really sucks when I get artist's block but I still have to draw for projects or some kind of deadline - the quality drop is very, very obvious.

What must you have when you draw?
Some kind of drink (usually tea), bright light, clean odourless air, music, motivation (in dire straits, a movie to watch/something to distract my brain will serve in place of motivation)

Do you have a lot of stray lines (messy lineart)?
Yes, but I am trying to get away with calling it *style*.

What is drawing to you?
Sometimes, it's a form of relieving stress. At other times, it makes me want to hit my head on the wall. Generally my feelings oscillate between the two at alarming speed.
Whatever it is, though, I can't live without it.

Your goal from now on?
Mid-term: To make enjoyable fanwork.
Long-term: Produce or collaborate in comic/game/book illustration.
Longest-term: Improve.

Artists you've had influence from?
Arthur Rackham; Kumiko Suekane; charizen; Thelwell; Nobuhiro Watsuki

Artists you like?
All of the above, + Kay Nielsen, Edmund Dulac, Aya Kato, Caravaggio, Hergé, Edgar Degas, Takehiko Inoue, Miwa Shirow, Kazuma Kaneko, Ronald Searle, the graphics of the anime Mononoke, Yoshitaka Amano. + many, many others
This is going off on a tangent, but I really admire Fumi Yoshinaga's storytelling skills.

Which is easier to draw, humans or animals?
Animals.

Please tell us the title(s) of your own comic(s)
"Working title" 8D I don't have any finalized title for my own work yet, let alone finalized designs.

Show us an old picture
btw, I am not telling porky-pie lies in order to get out of showing my god-awful past work (I mean, my human beings used to look like jellyfish), but all the truly ancient stuff is at home in Malaysia so the earliest thing I can dig up is something from high school senior year that I happened to upload on photobucket:

PROPORTIONS, YOUNGER ME, PROPORTIONSSSS!!

i promise to upload uglier things when i go home next june lol

What is the charm-point of your art?
Charm-point? What charm-point?
...I think it's the fact that most of it is done offline. It's refreshing (?)

What is the first thing you would draw if we're talking about fantasy?
Unicorns, or any kind of magical equine (qilin, pegasi, Sleipnir, etc)

Please draw your most beloved character(s):
What, now?! UM HERE

When thinking of characters is it mostly female? male? or androgynous/no sex?
Male and female in equal shares?

What did you draw yesterday?
the dachi (top of post), and thumbnails for a fruk 6koma

What is the funnest part to draw?
Hair. Cravats, too.

What part of other people's drawings do you notice first?
The face and proportions, usually. In large, epic images, the colours.

Regarding backgrounds, what is your method of making it easier to draw?
Agreeing with jali_jali on tracing =3= I try copying structures as well. Alternatively, place drawing in ostentatious spot where mum is bound to see it; mum sees it; mum corrects it - but I consider this method a last resort and even worse than tracing orz|||

What colour coordinations do you like?
Black/white/red; iridiscent gold/red/brown-orange; pink/white/sea-green

What character did you last draw?
Magoichi and Hideyoshi

Does your style change easily?
It changes with my mood. It's a real problem when I draw things that require more than one session to complete.

What part of drawing do you pay most attention to?
Faces, proportions, hair, detailing, particularly in the inking stage (which usually fails anyway).

How do you feel about drawing H pictures?
I'm no good at it :( they turn out like anatomical studies, I think it's because I don't find them moe to begin with

Do you like criticism from others?
Yes, if it's constructive.

How many people do you normally draw per artwork?
One or two, usually.

Btw, is anyone going to London Expo this weekend? I hear they're having some World Hetalia Day thing afterwards as well in the Chinatown area (on Saturday). Personally, I'm going to Expo itself on the Sunday (friend is cosplaying on that day) but might just pop down to stalk people on Saturday depending on circumstances.

next update: fanart backlog by category
lots of <s>crappy</s> stuff people, lots of stuff
still in process of crawling out of hole and relearning to use/abuse 24-hour internet access

HI ALL another quick, heartless and relatively pointless update:

I'm on the college computers right now, having registered for electives. AMAZING! more than 10 people not counting yours truly signed up for the graphic novel/manga elective, and now all that remains to be seen is as edohsama the optimist says: 'how many of them signed up to do essays on Marvel or DC?'

And I'm supposed to be at the post office buying pixie stamps for christmas cards, because unicorns are just 1st class and I need ~60p stamps to make up values to send cards out of the UK.(some of you will be getting them, if you want them ;3;)

That and the mythical creatures stamps are just plain pretty and I am the sort of fool who goes to the large post office at Charing Cross just to buy pretty stamps that I might not finish using up.

I also live 5 minutes away from the huge Paperchase on Tottenham Court Road now so I expect to port back rolls of gilt-print paper every so often again because they, too, are pretty and not too expensive for me to feel guilty about buying.

Internet is coming in on Friday, apparently, but I'll be in Paris till next Tuesday... so... yes, until next Tuesday. Wednesday, rather.

In the meantime I'll ask my flatmate nicely for the use of her mobile broadband and reply to comments and entries. Slowly. Three at a time, or something.

Pip pip.

I FEEL LOST AND CLUELESS WHEN I LOOK AT P-CHAT OR THINGS RESEMBLING P-CHAT LIKE TEGAKI AND SOMETIMES IN MY WORST MOODS, PHOTOSHOP /epic hand flailing, god I fail so much

+ pandarosi
this p-chat is when I actually learned the use of the mask tool and the fact that Takamin has an eyedropper function. <s>shhh I know I need to get better at this kind of thing.</s>

it was a long session, we were both tired 8D;;

english heraldry

"Now, now, young England, put on the nice dress..."
"Don't want to."
"If you're not careful, mon chou, when the wind changes your face will stay like that."
"THAT'S MY LINE, YOU NANCE! And why are you calling me a cabbage?"
...Yes, why is he calling him a cabbage? My knowledge of French is about as good as my Italian, which is to say: non-existent.

Oh yessss Arthur would breed his Bunearys and Lopunnys like this

CRASH CRASH CRASHER WAKE

OH THOSE BFFS. They would totally paint each other's toenails or something.

...Or it might just be a wig, I suppose.

Platinum team.
(The playboy bunny is male.)
I also have a Gallade but I didn't feel like drawing something that was clearly inspired by a cubist painting.

Ponyta, Rapidash (...and France)

continuing with the creature theme...

I found this while leafing through old sketchbooks looking for empty pages

Pierrot
I would like to see Pagliacci one day.

teaser France

Things happen, I go to mamak stalls with old school friends and to comic shops with otakus, I watch Transformers 2 a whole bloody month after its release, I play mahjong, I win <s>a couple of bucks</s> money, I get my amazingly large wisdom tooth pulled, I play too much Pokémon, all the usual things you do during summer break yadda yadda etc.

Time to get back to work and the internet, I hope you are all keeping well.

P.S. I think I nearly died of laughter at America's maru kaite chikyuu but it still doesn't beat four stunt actors in Imagin suits doing a poser pop/rock band PV.

...I can't wait for Gackt's stint as Riderman <s>it will be so unintentionally hilarious I was already laughing at the footage of him changing his arm</s>. And all that Cho: Den-O stuff?? I MUST CATCH UP.
